Last year's Gnaraloo trip was a bit different than the other years. The wind was unusually fickle, so we didn't sail anywhere near as much as we had planned...
A few of the boys in our camp had brought up their SUP's from Perth, and we had surfboards, so we had toys to play with! We had many great SUP sessions in the glassy early mornings, which made up for the lack of good wind.
Here's an account of one of those sessions:
Got up at 6:00. JG, Tim and Chris and I headed up to Tombies for a SUP. Light offshore, no-one else out, head high waves coming through. Sun just coming up. Hmmm, nice.
Fantastic session. Fast waves, gotta get your line right or they close out on you. Got some nose rides, shared a few waves with Tim. Lots of good wipeouts. Everyone was just hooting. Fun with your mates in paradise. That's what Gnaraloo's about.
Dave and Lawrence came out later on on the surfboards, and we swapped around SUP's and prone boards so everyone could join in the fun. Gotta say I found it much harder work on the standard surfboard - didn't get a wave!
At one point a humpback came through behind the lineup. JG went out for a closer look - brave boy - I wouldn't want to be upended by that beast. Massive powerful tails! Although I think they know when you're approaching - as JG got closer it dived for the bottom. Pretty cool experience.
We went hard at it for three hours. The other odd surfer came out from time to time, but it was pretty much just us during the whole session. Joy! Eventually we all came in, and headed back to camp for a big brekky of bacon and eggs. Aaah.
I'm glad we had the SUPs to make the most of the conditions!
I think the video does more justice to the spirit of these sessions than anything I can write.
