Managed to get a leave pass for a day over the long weekend which also coincided with the best looking forecast. Hit the road early with Jebbe in hopes of getting there around the same time as the guys that went down the day before. Arrived to see them all heading out, it looked pretty windy and Thomas and Tony were getting some great waves. Faffed around for a few minutes and took a few photos before rigging and getting out there too.
It had been about 16 months since I'd last sailed down here so needless to say I was pretty rusty and seemed to be doing the most swimming out of everyone. Struggled to read the sets for a while and it was more luck than good management when I actually got a wave to ride. There were some massive gusts on some of the faces, so there was a mix of butter smooth waves and some rough ones. But boy were the butter smooth ones nice to ride. Managed to break the top batten of my 4.7 during one of my rinsings but didn't want to go in so just kept sailing it. Until it was time to head in for some food, drink and a rest.
Changed up to the 5.3 before heading back out as it looked like it had dropped a bit. The waves were even harder to pick by this point and I think I caught one decent one before coming to grief before a decent set in the middle of the impact zone. Made a newb mistake and stuck my mast a little too deep under a wave and I think it bottomed out on the reef and I heard it snap as I was under water. Ended up with a pretty long swim as there was a bit of water moving around and I was knackered by the time I made it to shore.
Not too many photos of me as ususal, maybe next time my mate will come down just to take photos but there were a few nice moments captured.
Awesome to see all the boys and girls absolutely ripping it up out there. I hope it's not 16 months before my next session.
