Took a friends teenage kids out for a go on the SUP's. The 14 year old girl, Pega, turned out to be a natural so we went a little way off shore and found ourselves right smack bang in the middle of a huge work up of fish and about 500 shearwaters and assorted other sea birds. What an amazing and surreal experience. The shearwaters showed absolutely no fear of us whatsoever so they were sitting right next to and diving underneath our boards and we could clearly see them swimming around us. Meanwhile, the actual work up underneath was like a squall coming at us. I tried to tell Pega that it was probably Kawhai and Snapper driving the small fish up to the top but, in reality, there must have been a few sharks in there as well. There was quite a few very big splashes around us but I couldn't tell exactly what made them.
Unfortunately, Richard had taken the camera away him with on his camping trip, so on one of the few times that I had something really interesting to photograph, I didn't actually have the camera.
