Easily the biggest waves I've ever seen at Orewa and possibly the biggest I've ever surfed on a SUP. Not double overhead but certainly well over head high at times. Even Shane Brightman was disappearing between the waves in the bigger sets and he's tall.
Some great glassy rides to be had a low tide - in fact, I was trying to make sure that I got off the wave just in the seconds when the peak is becoming unstable before it breaks so as not to have to cop ten others on the head afterwards. I managed this on quite a few waves which is just as well as getting caught on the inside was totally exhausting.
I'm not sure whether the rising tide was affecting the waves or I was just too tired but after a while it got quite hard to catch them early and they seemed to close out. Fortunately for me I managed to ride one right into the shore with 2 reforms - about 500 metres I'd say. Now my head is spinning, my legs are aching and I can't even feel my arms. All signs of a great day.
I went to get the camera, only to find it's batteries low so I didn't wade out with it. My batteries were too low for that as well.
