Day 1 of the 2011 Wave Nationals and Taranaki was turning it on.
Driving down the road I could see massive rooster tails rising over the dunes at Kina Sth..... oh shit I thought.
When I got down to the water it looked MASSIVE on the Sth break, luckily we were sailing on the Nth Break which looked a bit easier to get out to, but even still it was pretty beefy on the set waves.
Wind was lightish so it was a quick rig up with the 5.3m and 85l as I was in the first heat.
I can't remember much about the heat apart from that I was pretty nervous heading out into the break. After a couple of warm up waves I settled in and the heat kicked off. First and last waves were my best, nice and deep and I made it through. Same again for the next heat but I lost out in the 3rd.
Such a primo day. A bit of a grovel at times heading out but always enough pressure in the wind to make it out pretty easily. I can definitely see that more time in proper DTL conditions would make all the difference.
Headed back to camp, after a few beers and some sausages. This time I shifted camp sites and moved up the top in a nice quiet sheltered spot with Jase and his Lady... good food, pro made cocktails and sleep on a nice soft flat campsite.
Up early for day 2 and into my second chance in the double elimination round.... game face time
