Well what can I say that hasn't been already.... This was very probably the best day wave sailing in my life.

The swell was monster with some mast and a half (solid) sets rolling in, but the Nth break was pretty well behaved. The point was well defined and it wasn't too hard getting out if you timed it right.

Today was the Double Elimination round. The first time this has been run in a long time and a chance to redeem yourself. Actually it was a really good idea as it gave you plenty of time on the water making the Nationals a 4 or 5 heat event rather than the usual single round knock out (which makes the whole deal a bit pointless for many).

Any way, 2 rounds yesterday meant that I had to go for it again today. This time I was more relaxed, knew how the break was working and my sailing was a bit better as a result. 2 more rounds and I thought I'd done my dash.... but when I hit the beach I was told to go out again. ok then...sweet!

I was in the heat for 4-6th place (I think) so the competiton was tough. First wave was an ok one, nice and deep and trying to hit the critical bits. The 75L and 4.5m were perfect, super loose and grippy.... total control.

I had a couple of crap rides in the middle with one shutting down on me mid bottom turn... drilling time. After seeing Paul H destroy his quiver I was bracing for the worst. Luckily the Naish sails full xply seemed to do the trick and instead of ripping the clew out or blowing a panel, all the force went to the out haul rope and broke it... a few minutes flopping about in the inside and I'd re attached the bits and was amping to make up for lost time.

The heat was just about over, enough time for one more wave.... Luckily I hooked into a beefy set and went balls to the wall on it. One of the best rides I've had.... BIG, deep and fast all the way to the inside with a little aerial to finish.

Not good enough to go through to the next round but enough to be super stoked.

Later the wind backed off a bit for the finals but the swell was super clean and the guys were shredding.

I've decided there's no replacement for proper DTL sailing in big swell... its something pretty damn special and I've got the bug for real.

So... the full double elimination done in 2 days with 2 more days free.... bring it on !!!

5 thumbs up!
