Information about Tawharanui, what's done there and who does it
Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Surfing, Waves, Long distance
Tawharanui is an ARC regional park and the first on the mainland to be protected by a predator proof fence. That means, don't bring your dog along (or any other pets for that matter). It's a very special spot, great for family picnics at the beach, often great for surfing and, sometimes windsurfing. Since the predator proof fence has been put up, ARC have released many native birds here and the forest is now crawling with birdlife.
There is an ARC administered camping ground here as well. You must book early during the summer to secure a spot and you need to be self sufficient.

Go here in an easterly for some great cross/onshore wave sailing. Best at high tide when reef is covered. Take a surf board and mountain bike and you might get to do all three. Wind conditions can be slightly better or worse than south end of Omaha. Wind can bend round into Omaha so can be different at Tawhas'. Also sailable in westerly but can vary over 15 knots from waters edge to out the back and gusty!! Remember no dogs and this is a marine reserve. Have sailed Kawau Bay side in southerly but not that great.
