Information about Matarangi, what's done there and who does it
Windsurfing - Speed, Waves, Just Cruising, Racing
Matarangi is best known as another holiday town for Jaffas, but is also a great place for water sports including surfing and windsurfing.
Matarangi is sited on a 5km long sand spit, with an ocean beach one side facing dead north, and a large estury on the south side.
The main beach is a good blasting in and out spot when it's side or side-onshore. Not really a true wave riding spot as the waves tend to break too close to shore. But it can be done on the right day / and tide. The main beach is also a great long board and SUP surfing place when there is no wind.
The main beach can be accessed via the reserve at the end of Kenwood Drive.
The Habour side has great all round flat water blasting conditions in anything from W to SW S, & SE. It can be gusty as the wind funnels down from the coromandel ranges in busts. There is a deep narrow channel through the estury marked by poles. Elsewhere the entire estury is waist to chest deep at high tide. Very clean water and a great place to sail.
The harbour can be accessed via Harbour Drive. (funny that!) Rigging on the grass next to the warf.
No camping around here but the are plenty of houses for rent, and some accomodation chalets on bluff road.
Bring your windsurf kit , surf boards , and bikes, (and golf clubs if your into that sort of thing!)
