Island Bay, Birkdale Auckland New Zealand. 36 48 37S 174 41 24E
Best suited for low water sailing on an incoming tide with SW. Speed strip operates best on .2m low tides although the Northern end will work on higher ones. (Start 36 48 40S 174 40 56E Finish 36 47 50S 174 40 40E)
Amenities include toilets and changing rooms and also a shower and hose tap on the pole by the dingy ramp.
Island Bay is situated in the upper Waitemata Harbour of Auckland on the North Shore. Access is via the Onewa off ramp from the Northern Motorway. Going North this is the second off ramp from the Auckland harbour bridge. Going South this is the last exit before the bridge. Keep following your nose along Onewa (and other names but same road) road for about 6 k until you find Island Bay Road on the left.
At the beach you will find plenty of parking and a grass rigging area. Before you rig check the wind strength at the end of the wharf since this is more accurate than the wind that has a funnel affect across the car park.
Points to watch-
Wear booties as there are Pacific oysters here.
Stay in channel past wharf end – there is a Telecom cable that has cement bags on top of it.
It is possible to sail the 5k over to Point Chevalier (36 51 35S 174 42 00E) but you really need look at the chart to get an idea of the mud banks and reefs.
