Welcome to paradise and the Chateau Royal Grand Prix in New Caledonia. Warm up event for the PWA. I had been on the fence about entering this event as I was worried about destroying my back before the PWA started but Tim talked me into it. Just getting to the start line was a handful, I changed down from the 7.8 at the last minute as it was cranking and didn't take the time to think about a smaller fin, a decision that was going to haunt me for the next 26km or so.

Missed the start by ages as there were just so many people on the water and I figured that I didn't need to be in the middle of the pack when I was so out of control.

As we got past Duck Island I started to realise what I'd gotten myself into, with the swell getting bigger and a nasty cross chop causing havoc with my board control I was putting all my effort into my back leg. The lighthouse seemed so far away as my leg started to burn and by the time I got there I realised that we weren't even halfway through the first reach! Definitely thought about throwing in the towel at that point as my god it was hurting. But said to myself that I really wanted to see the amazing clear water that everyone was talking about at the turn around point so decided to keep going. At some point on this leg the helicopter buzzed me and Patrice Morin got these two cracking photos.

The turn around was amazing. The white sand in this random shallow spot in the middle of nowhere was beautiful. A couple of quick slalom turns and then it was one more long reach back to Anse Vata and the finish line. A little while later as my other leg was starting to burn and the very distant hotels on the beach were getting a little closer my harness hook decided to give way so not only were my legs killing me but my arms were about to get a whole lot longer! When we got to the lagoon off Mast Island it was awesome, this is where lots of kites go on day trips and the water was quite flat and clear blasting for I'd say about 3km... The flat water was awesome however as I reached the end of it I got back into deep water in a hurry and the swell was insane at the drop off. Almost came down in a heap a few times but managed to hold it together for the blast back past Duck Island and the finish line.

Stoked to finish and hear that many people had pulled out along the way including heaps of locals. Very impressed with Tim's effort finishing the race on his 7.9, not to mention Albeau sailing about half the race with a broken UJ and still winning it! The boats recorded over 40kts of wind out on the course so no wonder I was maxed on the 7.0.
