Hooked up with Hans to do a mission from Narrow Neck to Rangitoto and back. Perfect conditions as glassy and not much boat traffic. Headed out and Rangi seemed to slowly loom large as we inched closer. We got across the shipping channel without being mowed down by a container ship and spotted a 'gin palace' cruising down the channel and hooked on the wake for a bit of a glide.
We got ashore on Rangi and I realised that I hadn't set foot on the island in a loooooong time which is crazy as Rangitoto has been the backdrop to so much of my life growing up on the Shore and I look at her ever day.
On the way back we switched boards and I rode Han's SIC 12'6 x 24". I thought it would be even more tippy than my 14' x 24.5" but it was really solid. I enjoyed the paddle back as it was a bit easier to ride on the SIC compared to the NSP which has a challenging roll when paddling that. I also tried out the Kialoa Hulu Double Bend paddle (http://www.kialoa.com/hulu-db.html) which has a unique shaft. It felt pretty good and reckon there could be something in this design. You have to get a solid clean catch or I felt there was a bit of flutter at the exit.
So had an awesome paddle and to finally set foot on Rangitoto is something I have wanted to do since I started paddling 5 years ago. Ironic it took a Wellingtonian to drag me across the shipping lane!
