Surfboard Debut at Orewa

Orewa, Auckland
Kite Surfing: freeride
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm Sunday. December 18. 2016
my rating 2 star rating
Wind Direction: N Wind Strength: light

Forecast was NW 5 to 9 kts but Little Fluffy Clouds was showing some NE 14 kts in Orewa around 13:00 hrs.

In the morning I checked the Orewa webcam and was looking good, I was waiting till midday to see if the wind will behaviour as per forecast, everything was looking fine. Time to head to Orewa.

When I get there the wind was pretty good, not strong but enough for one guy kiting with the 11 meters, other foil guy was with a 9 meters. The forecast was to increasing but I decided to pump the 12 meters Dice, but of course after I had everything ready the wind drop a little, was not bad because give me a reason to start with the surfboard.

I bought a Cabrinha S-Quad 5'10" and was keen to try it, my goal when I started kitesurfing was strapless surfing in waves, not a better time to try it. Ok, didn't have waves and I was not strapless, I forgot to bring the screw drive to remove the straps, but was the first step.

Waterstart was a little complicated than I thought, the straps are very large and I didn't want to put my feet all way on it because my target was strapless, I was trying to do as I didn't have straps. The problem was the board didn't want to stay on my feet, didn't take long for I realise I can't have the board sideways if I don't have some pressure on it and I start with the board flat on the water and when I dove the kite I turned the board the way I wanted.

The wind was light what make hard to go back at the same spot, the firsts 3 rides I need to walk back to the start point. I was very disappointed with the surfboard feeling, I don't know but in my mind should be different, the board was unstable, not responsive and not fun, but I was able to carving slow and ride a bit toe-side, stop, and waterstart for the other side. Until the wind pick up a little bit and I had my first real surfboard ride, when the surfboard start to planning was fun, changed totally the board felling, responsive, stable and fun.

I did one jibe transition, was much easier than I thought, I believe without the straps will be easier because I don't need to worry where I am putting my feet.

Of course not everything was flowers, sometimes I was able to jibe but I couldn't ride toe-side or change my feet, and the worst was when I was getting close to the sand and I took on foot of the board and the other one still going with the board, You can see the picture.

I am looking forward to try the surfboard again, I hope it will be my main board and the twin tip only for a strong wind days.
