Wind Direction: NE Wind Strength: underpowered

What we can do Wednesday after work if the wind barely reach 13kts? Go to Orewa and have a surfboard session.:-)

This was what happened. The wind was not really good, but some friends was planning go to Orewa to have a go, why not!!!

When I arrive in Orewa the wind was not good, was light maybe a little more than the last time, I could see some guys kiting in big size kites, my biggest one is 12, so I pumped the 12 Dice and took only the surfboard, with straps, I didn't have time to remove it. When I was ready to the water a friend was leaving and told me the wind was very light and didn't worth the effort, well I have everything ready and the surfboard, why not!!

The wind was light but better than the last time, I could ride and came back to the same spot pumping the kite like crazy, but I could came back, was like that for about a hour. To make the thing a little hard, someone decided to teach in from of the launch point, plus everybody else struggling to get upwind was a little traffic, not really bad but something else to pay attention.

I don't know why but I couldn't make any turn or ride toe-side, maybe because was more choppy and have some small waves or maybe I was not diving my kite hard enough, but every time I finished the carve turn, the kite was underpowered at the edge of the wind window. I tried to dive it hard but didn't work. I need to figure out what was going on to fix it. Other thing I couldn't have a answer was the pressure on the back foot, my go was to go upwind all the time and when the board start to planning I was put more weight on the front foot and keeping the board relative flat in the water, as soon I start to put pressure on the back foot and edge the board to go upwind the board lost speed, I could manage to go upwind both way but I don't know each one is the "correct" way, each one is more effective.

After a hour more or less the wind pick up a bit, started to be enough to keep planing without pump the kite and make easier go upwind, I still not able to do a jibe, ok I could turn the board but I couldn't ride toe side or change my feet, I tried tack once but didn't work, I couldn't pass the board under me, maybe with more speed and more wind to lift me, let's see.

Other mistake I did. When the wind pick up I was not too worried about go upwind and I could play a bit with the small waves, like make some turns to avoid the wave foam or turn against the wave to float the wave foam, only playing around. One time I was in the perfect spot to try catch a small wave and I did, I start to surf and the kite start to fall from the sky, my lines were slack and I couldn't control the kite, kite in the water and almost roll into itself, not good.

Was a good Wednesday after work, I get home very tired, much more if I have ride the twintip, maybe because each transition was a struggle, stop, turn the board and waterstart again, the other thing I realise is the surfboard is hard on my back, something I don't felt with the twintip.

Now it's time to be ready for the Christmas/New Year holiday

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, see you in the water
