Forecast was looking good, 23 kts gust 29 kts, I arrived in Orewa a bit after 12pm, The wind was already strong and the forecast was to increase. I decided to pump the 9 meters because I knew the 6m Airush DNA will not be enough.
I thought to try the surfboard, but the wind was strong, some small waves and my board was without straps, I don't think I am prepare to surf strapless with strong wind yet.
the first hour was pretty good, I have a lot of fun playing with the wave, it was not big but was waves this time. I could surf some and have fun, but I can see I need much more practice in waves to really feel comfortable. My big problem was going outside because I need to "jump" the waves, what I was doing was going upwind a lot to kill some speed and don't need to jump the waves, but some times I need to speed up to be able to avoid the white water and when I passed the wave was a empty space under the board and I don't have the kite to hold me, this means I was falling down till hit the water. I could control everything what I couldn't before, I was not crashing like the last time I was here with waves but some times I get a bit more air and I felt hard. I need to learn how to jump to be able to put the kite in the correct position to land more soft.
After a hour the wind start to pick up what was good to help me go out because I have more power but was bad to surf the waves, or the kite was to high and I can't turn or I have to much speed. To be true, I couldn't do much with the twin-tip, the board looks wrong when I was catching the wave, it is not natural. I don't know who to explain, but don't look right. I believe with the surfboard should be easier. By the way, I think at this time have more people on surfboard than with TT, I think was because didn't have the flat space between waves as normal, was kind of choppy all the way. I needed to work my legs a lot when kiting. As the wind increase the size of the wave as well and I decided stop and pump the 6 meters, at this time more and more people was in 7's. I pumped it waiting a bit for the wind increasing and try again.
This was an all new history, was not what I was expecting. The waves was a bit bigger, maybe almost a meter the big ones, but it was breaking more constant. I start going out and something happen in front of me because have 3 kiters on the water with the kite at 12 and I have no room to go, I stopped and turn, the 6m is very fast and I was not expecting it, I lost control and I almost crash, I could gain control again but I was in a spot were the waves was broken and the current was pushing me side ways, I try again and again to water-start but was everything wrong, I felt like I was learning again. I decided to stop, go to the sand, walk back upwind and start again.
This time I wait till I have clean path and was good, I make my way till outside, the 6 meters was not perfect, I need to pump the kite some times and I need to keep more speed to go upwind, this means I need to jump more and this make me tired, but was not bad. I make some mistake when I was transitioning because it took me a while to get used to the speed of the kite.
I crashed sometimes because the wave hit me and the 6 meters was not power enough to 'hold' it, with the 9 I could hit the wave and put almost all my weight on the kite, but with the 6 not and the wave dragged me out.
The best of the day was when I get one good size wave and it was almost breaking, the board start to nose dive, but I could control it, and start to get speed, more speed and I was cutting the wave like a surf. Was very fun. Do you know the moment you do something you believe was very cool and look around to see if someone saw it for you can smile..., but no body is looking. Yet, was one of this moments. :-)
