The forecast is light wind around 12 kts, when I get there the wind was not bad, some people where in 12 meters with the twin-tip but I thought I will be better with the surfboard, and was a good opportunity to practice it strapless.
I pumped the 12 meters Dice, prepare everything to drifting self launch, this time I took time to check everything to be sure nothing goes wrong. Launch was good, the lines took a bit to untangled because I didn't walk upwind when I was releasing it, but was good.
The wind was pretty good, I got a good pressure and could kite without pump the kite, on the firsts legs I was positioning to far back on the board, more or less where the straps should be and the board nose was "kicking", after I move a bit to the middle of the board it stop and was easy to ride as well.
The fun about the surfboard is how it turn, I enjoy a lot play with the board, I am still a bit shy in the turns, but I am getting there.
Some stuff that didn't went well, First I couldn't make any jibe, sometimes I could turn but didn't have power to ride a bit toe-side to switch feet. I think I was diving the kite to slow because when I finished the turn the kite was almost in the edge of the window and I need to turn it hard up to get some pressure. I tried dive the kite harder in one of the jibe and I lost control and felt far downwind, kite in the water and took a bit of time to be able to fly the kite again, of course the board was far way upwind, I thought I will never get to the board, I am not good body-dragging upwind, but was pretty easy in only one tack I was much high than the board. I believe because the surfboard have more area outside the water and the current was pushing it downwind was much easier.
After that I was much more downwind than I would like and the wind start to die, I needed to pump the kite a lot all the time to be able to move and again I tried go to much upwind making all worst. In the end I was going to the "dead zone", a parentheses here, "dead zone" is what I call a place in Shoal bay where if you get there is very difficult to go back upwind and you will be stuck in the mangrove and need to do the "walk of shame", this place move a bit depending the wind direction and intensity, but is always there, close parenthesis. Going back, I was going to the "dead zone" and I new I need to return before is to late, I didn't try to jibe, I only stop jump in the water grab the board turn it and..... My kite fall from the sky.:-( I couldn't believe, again was not easy relaunch it and I start to be tired, I tried a couple of times waterstart but the wind was not enough. I started to look to the small beach downwind, better than the mangrove, but the wind came back and I was able to ride upwind and far away from the "dead zone".
The big problem was I was not commiting in the jibe anymore, I was turning thinking in grab the board before I have felt, very bad. After the wind die a couple of times I decided is time to stop before I get stuck.
In the end, as always, was very fun, kite with the surfboard is very fun. Next time I will try with leash, I know everyone say is danger, the board will hit you in the face, etc but I will be using helmet, a long leash and if the wind is light, because if I can't commit in the jibe it will not happen. In Orewa the waves will always bring the board downwind I don't need leash, lets see what happen.
