Nice session tonight after everyone bailed home. Wind was a bit light and fickle to start with but just on dusk started getting really good. I got to try my night lights out for the first time properly on the water tonight. I took a month of researching but finally I have got the setup thats pretty mint. http://www.troutie.com/Product%20page%201.html

5 thumbs up!

lights ... cool - I have some great bike lights (ay-up) which are waterproof and wondered about doing a night sail sometime - my concern is the baterry is only 1m submersable (lights are 5m) and the fact of sailing in the dark !!

Yep I looked at those lights but they are not that bright. Thye do last a long time and are pretty light. I am getting 1100 lumen's out of my set, I think the Aye ups are around 600 lumens. Worth a try though.

Definitely a bright set up. We could see the waves illuminate as you were surfing them. The other bonus was that it was hard not to see you in the water. If you ever got into trouble the light would act like a beacon.

Haha-mental, I've always wanted to sail after dark...

Louis - you are right they are 320 lumens each - I have 4 on the bike (2 on handlebars and 2 on the helmet) so not sure how I would mount more than 2 on the helmet - video is cool ...i'm tempted now

I used an old plastic kayak helmet and cable ties to attach them. The Ayeup guys reckon the lights are waterproof but you just need to rise them down with fresh water when your done. The other approach is to fill the light with silicone if you are really paranoid. My setup has a wider beam than most of the standard mountain bike setups and has 6 cre leds in a row. 2 spot, 2 mediaum and 2 wide focus. The following is a thread that describes the setup and considerations. http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=517536

Or you could mount a set to the mast and one on your helmet.

Thats fricken awesome.... looks like some kind of UFO out in the water.

Who cares about daylight savings now, night comp anyone? Imagine seeing someone do a rocket air... all lit up!!!

you could get one to illuminate your kite or a sail.... freaky glowing things skooting across the water at night.... would they attract fish?

..yeah good for attracting big scary sharks...

Yep, that would be some good footage! Rocket air and sharks. Sounds like to make it worthwhile you need the brightest light you can get.

The light took quite a bit of research and special thanks to Lincoln and Troutie who are the bike light masters. Yes Troutie did make them up for me. http://www.troutie.com/Product%20page%202.html You could probably do it for a bit cheaper if all you were after is 800 Lumens, but this is what my setup cost. Not cheap, but I am happy with the result and is the best bang for buck from what I could find. My standards were pretty high because I wanted it to last a decent amount of time (5 hours on high)

Battery (Battery Space )- $154.54 USD delivered https://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3702

Waterproof Plastic clip (Repco)- $14 NZD

Light (Troutie )- $175 pounds (fully built and delivered) http://www.troutie.com/Product%20page%202.html

Plastidip- $25 NZD

Charger- $43 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15225

If you want the cheap headlight this all in one for 79 dollars delivered is a steal. You could mount 2 of these and get a pretty decent combined light. You would need to fill it full of silicone to make it waterproof. The quality and efficiency of the components aren't as good however but good enough for a 2 hour session. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25149
