Information about Scheveningen, what's done there and who does it
Windsurfing - Waves, Bump n Jump, Racing, Just Cruising, Grovel/Swim,
Scheveningen has two spots on both sides of the harbour-entrance. The southside ('De Zuid'), great with N/NE, and the northside, with SW/W as ideal sideshore winds. With strong S winds (crossoff) and the right swell 'Scheef' can really work! Without swell and S winds you'd better go to Wijk aan Zee or get the slalomquiver out. Scheef is lively with a large surfcrowd, an active community of kitesurfers and on good days about 20-40 windsurfers using it as their homespot plus a lot of 'guests';-)). During the summer and with good winds there can be 60+ windsurfers on the water! It can be real crowdy during the summer with a lot of tourists but most of the time, parking is easy (pay 2 euro's an hour during summer) right at the boulevard. Scheveningen has its own surfvillage, called FAST right at the beach/ harbour-entrance with even the possibility of camping and has several shops within a 5 min walk of the beach. Several (kite)surfschools are exploited on the beach.
At this moment the beach and shoreline are 'under construction'. Extra sand is being added to the shoreline to protect the boulevard and city from the water. Last winter the effect was that the original surfbreak changed to a shorebreak. A good storm is needed to create the natural banks and help to create better waveriding and jumping-conditions. Hope that it works out this year. As Scheveningen is one of the top surfspots of the Netherlands there's still a discussion going on about creating an artificial reef to provide better or even great surf conditions. Hope someday to see the plans getting realized!
