General Information

This is a very scenic spot which is great for blasting / bump and jump if the wind is dead on Westerly. The wind blows off Orewa and then travels the length of the Whangaparaoa Peninisular before blowing across Army Bay. Westerly (cross-shore) winds can therefore be pretty strong and clean with a decent bit of wind-blown swell for Bump and Jumping. You'll see the the wind increase as you drive along the Peninsular which will have you fully amped by the time you arrive at Army Bay!

I think Army Bay also works in a North west but then Big Manly is a great spot in this direction. It doesn't work if there's any south in the wind but then Te Haruhi is just around the corner on the south side! It apparently doesn't work well if the wind is northerly (due to the effect of local topography on the wind)....again, go to Big Manly instead. So, in a nutshell, westerlies work best.

I've been advised to watch out for a big wind shadow off the bulbous end of the headland so always stay well upwind of that. I would also recommend you sail with someone or advise someone of your whereabouts in case you get into trouble beyond the headland ...your next stop would be South America if you drift between Great Barrier and the Coromandel!! It's for this reason I usually sail with sufficient board volume at this spot (especially if I'm on my own).

There's a great grassy rigging up area which is conveniently sheltered from a westerly. If you go in a true westerly the wind will be in force by the time you dip your toe in the water! On that note, go to the water's edge to gauge the wind before choosing your sail. Also bear in mind it is usually a bit stronger ~50m out. The beach is sandy with the very occasional rock so bare feet is good. Surprisingly, this is not a well known spot so the chances are you might be sailing on your own...unless word gets out of course ;) I personally rate it very highly in a westerly and would like to see more people there enjoying it on a good day.

The odd dolphin has been seen at this spot.
