Comp Day 1

Lyall Bay, Wellington
Windsurfing: Waves
11 am - 2 pm Saturday. October 10. 2009
my rating 4 star rating
Wind Direction: SW Wind Strength: powered   using 3.0 - 4.0m sail. Swell Direction: Swell Size: nonexistent Tide: High - Falling.

Got down to the Freewave early to help set up stuff. Ended up huddled under the wagon tailgate sipping hot coffee with Fabgeli, Nick and a few others. It was damn freeeeeeezing.

Conditions looked pretty good. 30-40knt S-SW winds and some solid sets rolling in. At least the sun was out (for now).

Everyone arrived on cue just after 10am and with the conditions looking like they were going off, I decided to give the TV guys a call. They sounded pretty keen and arrived just before the first heat kicked off.

Not sure if the reporter woman was that keen on being out in the cold wind.... and rain, but she toughed it out ;) Should be on TV One News tonight.

Any way the first heat got underway around 11am and I was in it. Sailed like a kook, my excuse is that I couldn't feel my fingers and toes about 2mins after hitting the water.... so I ended up just making up numbers in that heat.

Got back to the beach and tried to defrost. I have to say that thawing out fingers has to be one of the most painful things.... was so painful that I felt like puking... tough eh?

In the following heats I acted as a spotter for the TV Camera Op.... pointing out the guys to watch and hoping that we end up getting some 'good' action on the news tonight. They were pretty stoked with Troy's aborted forward... looked impressive (and painful).

The rain came and went in frontal squalls, so at least you had a few minutes warning before getting drenched with horizontal BB's.... every boot tailgate was in use as folks tried to keep out of the weather.

I decided to slip on the flippers and act like a seal for the semi's and take some shots from the water.

After the first couple of waves on the head and I almost pulled the pin.... instant icecream headache. But once I went numb and got through the breakers it wasn't so bad. Swimming out in the rip was fun and kept me warm.

I tried to get in a good spot to get pics of both jumps and rides but I wasn't gonna happen. Jumps were out further and rides were in closer.... decided to go for jumps first, then get washed in later to get rides. I think I got a few goodies but the lens fogged up a bit.... spit seems to work well to clear it up, so if you see me tonguing my camera its not because some weird fetish.

Highlights would be Clayton nearly landing on me, only missing by about meter or so. Very glad I had the helmet on. James C pulling a nice Push loop right in front of me and Troy getting a really funny slow motion catapult.... I thought it was funny, not sure he did.

You really do get a great vantage point out in the water, especially when the guys are flying and spinning up over your head..... super cool.

6 thumbs up!
