Information about Steeple Rock, what's done there and who does it
Windsurfing - Freestyle, Racing, Just Cruising
Hey! There's no general info for this spot yet. Do you know anything about it?
Sailable from S->SE, and even a SW if you sail south of the rock. Best in a SSE at low outgoing tide when the flat spot behind the rock isn't in wind shadow, and the kelp flattens off the chop. The last three hours of the outgoing tide typically produce the flattest conditions. Can be quite choppy in a SE, but still good as long as you don't get tempted by the flat spot behind the rock, as this is in wind shadow. If it is 'really' gusty on the inside, there's probably too much west in the wind, so head to the south side of the rock and you'll still get a good session (there's a rolling swell but the chop is small and predictable).
Definitely the windiest place in Wellington in a southerly, so if it is marginal at the Ditch or Lyall, you might get a session in here.
Also, you'll always have a bit of a grovel to get out to the wind regardless of the direction, so freestyle or big kit only.
