Information about Tamarin Bay, what's done there and who does it
Hey! There's no general info for this spot yet. Do you know anything about it?
The wave starts far up the reef, peeling too fast to ride, then enters the takeoff section where it slows down enough to catch, as it begins to bend into the bay in a long flawless speed line, brushed clean by the offshore southeast trade winds.
The waves of Tamarin Bay had been surfed, photographed, and published as far back as the mid-1960s, but it wasn't until the release of the film "The Forgotten Island of Santosha" in 1974 that the screaming left barrels of the outer reef at Tamarin Bay were fixed in the consciousness of surfers everywhere.
The wave itself is much the same today as it was then. A small village on the leeward side of Mauritius, with the same public access path to the top of the point, the same fishing boats anchored behind the reef. If your visit coincides by chance or intent with a major swell, one of the few each season big enough to light up the reef with jaw-dropping perfect waves, consider yourself one of the lucky few.
