Made the call to head over the hill and check out the Palliser coast. It was getting late in the day (2:30 by the time we left my place) so we knew we were pushing it a bit. Chris and I took big wave sailing gear and the SUP's so we had all based covered. Unless it was 10 knots onshore.

But NO! We arrived to find Whatarangi delivering chunky down the line walls. And bigger than the time we scored it a few weeks back. And a light cross-offshore breeze that was holding up the peaks. And no-one else out.

On the water, it was pig out time. For two hours, we scored consistent sets at head to double overhead. I remember being on the inside watching Chris bulleting down the line on one that was a good 12 foot face. If you got your take-off position right, it just went on and on for 150m or more, with a couple of reforms on the inside to keep things interesting.

If you didn't quite get it right and were too deep, you could make the takeoff OK, but then the first section would wall right up and close out on you. As I found out on a couple of waves.

The 11'4" SUP handled the waves of this size amazingly well. Got a bit bouncy at times on the face, but otherwise it turned well and was loving it.

Two waves of the day for me. One was a pretty late take off on a pretty big one, and I was just looking down into this pit. But I somehow made it and then had a huge long wall almost to the beach. Chris reckoned the look on my face on the takeoff was priceless. Funny how some people enjoy other peoples' terror...

And my last wave. Decided to get a good one in before packing up. Got a small one and thought 'nah, I can do better than that' so I paddled back out as Chris made his way in. A nice sized one showed up on the horizon, I got in the perfect spot, and tucked in for another 150m+ ride down towards the bommie. Oh yeah.

We finished off the session with a couple of beers, watching the sunset.

Glad we made the call!

Always good when you commit to the long drive over the hill and it pays off!

Dig those long walls. And yet it was windy here. Choice!
