Wind was perfect - just needed more waves

Lyall Bay, Wellington
Kite Surfing: waves
1 pm - 3 pm Sunday. March 28. 2010
my rating 4 star rating
Wind Direction: S Wind Strength: powered

Got up this morning & realised there was a nice southerly blowing. Usually I'd be checking the forecast days before & getting amped about a potential session at Lyall, but today I was just going with the flow. I checked the new real time Lyall surf cam & saw that it was low tide & the waves were pretty small, so I went out did some things in the morning before heading down to the beach just after lunch.

I rolled up & was greeted with 20 plus knots of steady wind - the steadiest its been at Lyall for a long time. There was potential with the waves too - they could have been bigger but a few nice ones were coming through with the incoming tide, & at least the sun was out!

At this stage I was getting amped for the session & one of the guys from Stikman Films had rocked up to shoot some more water footage. I headed down the beach & pumped up the kite & rolled out the lines, but when I got back to the car I realised I had left my safety on another harness that I used the week before in the harbour blast. So I jumped in & raced back home to grab the other harness. Its amazing how slow other people seem to drive when your in a hurry. I tell you I must have gotten every Sunday driver & red light on the mission to get that harness - I hate forgetting gear, especially when the conditions are really good.

Got back to the beach within 10 minutes even though it felt like an eternity. Launched & was out there. Wind was steady & the 9m Takoon Furia Ltd was handling it like a dream. Waves were looking good before I got out there, but unfortunately the tide was filling in pretty fast, & the swell had dropped slightly with fat waves to match. But at least the wind was good & it wasn't totally flat, so I made the most of what there was & had a heap of fun.

Traffic out there was pretty busy with both windsurfers & kiters making up the crowd, but everyone was pretty courteous & there was no real drama. Although there was some kite carnage at one stage...I didn't see what happened but when I looked there was 3 kites all tangled up on the beach. Everyone seemed ok & it was 3 less kites to worry about so I enjoyed the extra space.

After about two hours of kiting, I was getting pretty tired & making mistakes, so I decided to pull the pin & come in. Every one I spoke to on the beach after wards agreed it was a nice little session, but that could have been a little different for the windsurfers as they seemed to struggle a bit during the lighter wind periods.

Really nice wind, but lacked a bit with the wave factor, so I'm giving this session 4 stars.

4 thumbs up!

Yeah, I was struggling a bit in front of Maranui on the small board. Then changed to light wind board and got my revenge.

There is a Brazillian guy that is now in Wellington looking for work. He was given an opportunity on a yacht in Fiji, MY Aquarius and to cut a long story short after a few weeks on the boat, he was escorted out of the country and sent back to NZ.

It has now become known, that he trolls bars in the early hours to pick up young girls. If they are drunk enough, he takes them home - it not, he drugs them with Rohypnol. This info has been forwarded to the department of immigration, and they intend to do an investigation.

His name is Pedro Bueno and he is known to be in Wellington. We know the Wellington Boat Show was today but please forward this information to as many people as you can. If it prevents him from finding work, or protects any young ladies, we have played our part.
