Sweet morning SUP

Whatarangi
Stand Up Paddle Boarding: Surfing
9 am - 12:30 pm Sunday. April 18. 2010
my rating 5 star rating
Wind Direction: SW Wind Strength: glassy Swell Direction: SW Swell Size: head Tide: High - Falling.

Woke up in the tent at Lake Ferry with a bit of a hangover. Blah. There'd better be waves today - I need to get in the water! After a bit of a drama trying to leave the campground (the security gate wouldn't let us out - maybe it know Magnus hadn't paid!) we hit the road back to Whatarangi to see what it had in store for us.

The swell had dropped a bit overnight but it had glassed off and still looked good. Magnus and Chris headed out while I did some filming (see vid below). Klaas, Nils and crew headed further around the point to see what they could find there.

Once I'd got enough action on tape, I suited up only to find them coming back in, complaining that the swell had been killed off by the tide.

Eh? As they were making other plans, with their backs to the sea, wave after wave kept rolling in. Seriously. I couldn't work out what they were on about. Are these dudes just getting a bit too fussy? Eventually, the three of us took the only real option available - get back out there! Never leave waves to look for waves.

Then we spent the next couple of hours scoring endless rides. We all got pretty keen on the party wave concept and there were a few near misses but nothing that drew blood. Chris was getting his 10'6" really dialled in with some sweet turns off the top - really nice to watch. Duncan joined us and was getting into the groove with some hard paddling being rewarded with some nice rides. Magnus practiced a bit of yoga on his board, and in a lull between the sets had a bit of a cat nap too.

Later on Klaas paddled out and told us that around the corner there were 15 or so surfers out. Let 'em have it - this place is perfection.

On the way in I noticed Chris was prone paddling. It turned out he had snapped his paddle and it had sunk to the bottom. Oh well I know he's been looking for an excuse to buy a new carbon one - this sounds like the perfect one!

Afterward a grabbed a bit of lunch on the beach, then headed home, tired, sunburned, sore and stoked! Awesome weekend.

7 thumbs up!

Sounds like the swell was bigger than Lyall over the weekend?

Either way its great to get away from the crowds anyway
