We took our time getting over to Palliser, getting to Whatarangi just after lunch.
As we got out of the wagon it was clear that there was some good swell coming in, and also the NW wind.
Now the decision was is it windy enough to windsurf, or light enough to take out the SUP.... or keep driving for a better spot. As we sat there twiddling our thumbs more of the crew turned up after having driven further south. Word was that it was no better or worse than where we were. That made the choice simple.
Diggers had his massive Kona board so he opted to go windsurfing and some of the other guys put rigs on their SUP's and went for a toodle about in the swell. I had smaller windsurf gear so decided on going for a SUP in the lumpy cross shore wind.
Paddling was very hard work in the mix of 5-10knts of wind, close together knee high chop, cross current, in coming tide and swell. I managed to hook into nice waves on the Point before I decided to try out the Reef while Diggers was getting some nice Logo high down-the-line rides on his Kona.
That spot is a bit of a head f@#k to surf, you have to be in the EXACT spot to catch the waves, 3m off and you'll either miss them or get cleaned up. Klass and I tried for a while but the current and wind just made it almost impossible.... so we bailed back to the point where we scored wave after wave as the wind dropped off to zero and the swell cleaned up more and more
Then it was beers on the beach watching the most amazing sunset and back to Lake Ferry camp ground and the pub for dinner and more beer.
