Wow, the wind here really is fnk strong. The tramontane wind is like the NWer in the south island. Dry, hot and fast. mmm, sounds like a porno. But in reality its the most insane wind I've ever felt. Today started off with a mild 30-35 knots. The first race for the day started at 11 am and was a longer course than yesterday. Twice around, each leg 12 km long. So all up 48 km of racing. I got a good start this time, half way up the line. The pin end is well favoured but I left the pro's to it. On the start line the wind was blowing around 30 knots. Near the first mark the wind started to increase to around 35 knots. messy gybe with 40 other sailor around. Then back towards the start boat to round it as the second mark. hard work staying on the board fully maxed out on the 6.2 and 58 slalom. Luckily I had a nice C3 fin in which was quite forgiving. Must have finished around 50-60 in that race.

Then off to lunch and another sleep. Checked out the result of yesterdays race. Race one was a poor 98th. Largely because of the park up on the start. Race two yesterday was the best result yet. 58. Nice. Especially since I dropped around 10 places due to having to tack to get to the mark.

Over lunch the wind just built and built. it was blowing 40 gusting 45. And at the top mark it was 50 knots. The organisers were on the PA giving us constant updates to that we could make a decision on what to rig. My smallest was a 6.2. bugger. Got into my wetsuit to sail out to the start line and heard on the PA it was blowing 45 knots at the start line. Guys and girls were rigging up 4.5 wave sails. 5.0 race sails. I thought to my self, if I had all the gear in the world with me, would I go out on the 6.2. So promptly proceed to take the wetsuit off and stay on the beach for the next race. Not sure what would have been worse, getting sandblasted on the beach or dying from windburn on the water. Let alone getting passed by grommets on 4.5 wave sails. Lucky for us, there was a beer fridge near by so soon it did not matter anymore. We watched the leader com screaming in on a 5.0 miles ahead of everyone else. There is something to be said for sailing in control in those sorts of conditions. Whilst on the beach I took some nice photos, like the one where my board was nearly fully covered in drift sand, a foto of the race, and a nice photo of the yellow wave board getting buried in sand.

6 thumbs up!
