It's been brewing for days and days..... and finally it arrived!

Its been a very long time since I sailed at Lyall and today it turned the dial all the way up. MASSIVE swell and good near cross-shore wind, it was as good as it gets.

The lows sitting off the coast finally sent us some wind and swell and there was no way I was missing out. In my rush to get south I grabbed the wrong sail... 4.7m 'demo' Session instead of the usual 4.5m Force... Probably not much difference between the two, but using unfamiliar gear when its a "fuck up and you might die" kinda day makes you think.

Anyway the Session was amazing.... super smooth and handled everything Lyall Bay could throw out at it and it got me out of a couple of sticky spots.

OK the conditions....

The swell was massive. On the sets it would break out further than I've seen it since the Waitangi day storm a few years back. Difference was that we were out amoungst it this time.

Lawrence and I sailed pretty much out past the break water right off the beach there was soo much west in the wind. Once out the back we were met with some enormous swells, they were like sailing up and over small hills. Some would break and that was really scary.. well over mast high walls of white water closing out the bay with no way around or over. So it was a day of chicken gybes and keeping your shit together.

The rides were epic if you chose carefully and loads of fun.

Highlights. Saving an Albatross that got wash in from the south, a broken wing but now safe and warm at the SPCA.

Scaring the crap out of myself out passed the breakwater when I got chased down by a closeout set.

Scoring some epic rides on some nice bowly waves.

Stoked to see so many smiling faces out in the hardcore conditions.

Seeing so much water moving around was pretty special too...

5 thumbs up!

not bad for a clip from an iPhone camera ;) ... should have cracked out the HD cam Tim!

I noticed that the latest version of the Olympus Tough range (the waterproof digi stills cam) now does HD video too... sweeet!
